YOUNG AT THE OPERA. Åke's mother is named Berit. Or, she was called Berit yesterday. Today, she is a dragon and licks her toes. She has forgotten how to make breakfast and where the milk is. She mostly wants to eat flies. When mom gets this childish, Åke must be an adult instead. This will be an adventure!
The opera My mother is a dragon is based on Pija Lindenbaum's popular children's book When Åke's mother forgot. The show premiered at the Royal Opera on November 7, 2015, and is a collaboration with the Gothenburg Opera (where the show premiered in 2011). Pija Lindenbaum has created the imaginative costumes and the performance is aimed at children 5-8 years of age - and their families.

The MAGICAL
House part 2

Costume Magic!

At the top of the Opera building you can find the costume department. The Royal Opera actually has more than 30 000 costumes! The costumes strongly contributes to the magic created on stage - they invite us to a world of magicians, bears and princesses - and all in between. Together with our host, Sara, we try on some costumes and we get to know more about how to get the right costume on the right person!
The Young at the Opera section has created the web series The Magical House for classes 1-3. There are more than 1000 rooms and 120 professions that we will discover together! This is the second episode of the series.
A big thank you to Astrid Ohlin who made this episode possible - to the memory of Jan Ohlin - and Wallenius Lines.

SHIFT | CACTI

Alexander Ekman's corona adapted work with and for the Royal Swedish Ballet

In the spring of 2020, the world was paralyzed by the corona pandemic, and theaters around the world were forced to close. At the end of May, the choreographer Alexander Ekman was hired to create a corona-adapted work for the Royal Swedish Ballet's dancers, which becam the work SHIFT.
The second presented work is Ekman's most recognised internationally, CACTI (2010), which has never been shown in Sweden before. »CACTI is about how we view art and how we feel the need to analyze and" understand "art. I feel that there is no "correct" way and that everyone is free to interpret and experience art as they wish. "
The performance is realised with the support of the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

Saariaho's La Passion
de SIMONE

Lauded oratorio with Anne Sofie von Otter

Welcome to the passionate universe of the French-Jewish philosopher and mystic Simone Weil. Before she died aged 34, she participated in the Spanish Civil War, worked in a refugee camp, in a factory and as a teacher and, above all, she formulated radical ideas about the basic needs of individuals as well as society as a whole.
La Passion de Simone is a piece of musical drama by the world-famous Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho with a libretto by the French-Lebanese author Amin Maalouf. Soloist is court singer Anne Sofie von Otter who appears together with the Royal Chorus and the Royal Orchestra under the baton of Christian Karlsen. The performance is preceded by an introductory talk with dramaturge Katarina Aronsson in conversation with Kaija Saariaho (see below). The concert is available until January 31st, 2021.

JENNY LIND
200 years

One of the opera world's most celebrated and beloved singers

In this concert, recorded at the Royal Swedish Opera in October 2020, the Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling pays tribute to "the Swedish nightingale". At the beginning of her career, Tilling received the Jenny Lind scholarship and is now one of our most appreciated concert and opera singers with many prestigious assignments around the world. A faded opera diva plots her revenge from an apartment in 1970s Paris. At a traumatic performance six years earlier, her career came to an abrupt end. The question is, will her voice and her nerves cope with a return to the limelight? A visit from a journalist awakens her hope that all is not lost, but will she be able to overcome her demons?
Prima Donna is indie icon and opera lover Rufus Wainwright’s tribute to the art of Romantic opera and it is his first opera which premiered in 2009. Prima Donna is a Maria Callas-inspired story about a self-destructive diva and our insatiable need to both applaud her and mock her.
