Meet the Royal Ballet in unusual circumstances... What do one do when one is not allowed to practice indoors - or even close - as an elite athlete? We met up with rehearsal director Hlín Diego Hjálmarsdóttir and members of the Royal Swedish Ballet in the middle of Stockholm on a beautiful spring day. For a spot of exercise. Ballet style.

DANCER'S PORTRAIT -
Madeline Woo

Meet one of the dancer's of the Royal Swedish Ballet

Meet Madeline Woo - dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet. We met up with Madi during a corona-safe rehearsal of Don Quijote, supervised by the director of the ballet, Nicolas Le Riche. Madeline tells us about her life as a dancer, what it is like to move across the globe to follow your passion - dance. A passion passed on to her by her mother when she was born...
With Jane Lennard-Suff at the piano and with rehearsal director Eva Nissen.

DANCER'S PORTRAIT
Dmitry Zagrebin

Meet Dmitry Zagrebin - first soloist in the Royal Swedish Ballet. You are invited behind the scenes by Dmitry, ballet director Nicolas Le Riche, pianist Jane Lennard-Suff and ballet master Eva Nissen as they rehearse the role of Basilio in Don Quixote. Dmitry talks about his background and shares his thoughts and fears facing the corona crisis. How can a dancer stay in shape and on top of his/her artistry when they are not allowed to do what they love?

Alexander Ekman's
ESKAPIST

Excerpts from the hit performance with the Royal Swedish Ballet

Alexander Ekman is a choreographer that keeps on surprising us. In 2012 he created his first piece for the Royal Swedish Ballet - Tyll - and in 2015 his Midsummer Night's Dream was a huge success at the Royal Swedish Opera. Today he creates dance productions all over the world - but he returned to the Royal Swedish Ballet in 2019 with an original creation - Eskapist. A production like no other - Eskapist quickly sold out and was loved by critics as well as the audience. This compact production shows exclusive, selected scenes from Eskapist and a (rare) interview with Alexander Ekman.

Meet the Artist –
MIKAEL KARLSSON

On creating music for dance

Mikael Karlsson is the composer who has been working side by side with Alexander Ekman on several projects. How do you actually go about it when composing for dancers? How do you cooperate with the choreographer? Meet one of the most interesting Swedish composers right now - who just landed a contract for a full length opera with the Royal Swedish Opera!

Meet the Artist
HENRIK VIBSKOV

From the catwalk to the stage - similarities and differences

Henrik Vibskov is one of the most celebrated designers of the Danish fashion design miracle - and just like composer Mikael Karlsson, he often works with Alexander Ekman. The trio collaborated on the acclaimed Cow at the Semperoper in Dresden. How does creating for the stage differ from creating everyday fashion? How do you go from idea to a finished product - that you can actually dance in?

JAG KOMMER HEM
a part of Short Stories II

An insight into a reality "close to home"

Malin Hülphers has been active as a composer since 1991 and mainly writes musical drama. A part from several children's operas, she has also composed chamber music, musicals, music for dance pieces as well as setting music to lyrical texts. She is also active as a librettist. Hülphers' has been house composer with Göteborgsoperan and with the Regional Music for Västernorrland and is currently heading the stage art department at Estrad Norr. VALUE CREATION
a part of Short Stories II

The finance world analysed in a short opera with a moral twist

Viktor Åslund studied piano and later moved on to conducting. In parallel to his career as a conductor, Åslund has also been active as a composer and in arrangement. He composes orchestral pieces, chamber music, songs and film music. In 2016 he composed Steppenwolf after the novel by Hermann Hesse - it became Åslund's first operatic work. Value creation is his second opera, a twisted story, with hints of film noir, and it dissects the morals of the financial world.

PART 1

  • BAKOM KULISSERNA 3 DAYS LEFT

  • GENRE BEHIND THE SCENES, DOCUMENTARY
What happens at the Royal Swedish Opera - behind the curtain? It is the workplace of between 550 and 1000 people - every year. There is a multitude of different professions, artistic staff of course, but also just about everything from blacksmiths to physical therapists. Rumor has it there are more than 1000 rooms in the building (but no one really knows). There is a very particular heartbeat in the house - a heartbeat that culminates in a curtain call every night. Tag along this documentary produced by SVT in 2013 - welcome to The Life at the Opera in five episodes!
Life at the Opera, part 1. In this episode you meet first soloist Marie Lindqvist who is about to do her last performance of the ballet Sleeping Beauty. You also meet chorus tenor Jon Nilsson in his preparations for the premiere of Turandot. And physical therapist Pirjo Lehmussalmi is troubled by many injuries at the end of the season.
